The hydraulic and pneumatic atomizer

The task of an atomizer is to fractionate the liquid drops to obtain smaller droplet diameters compared to standard spray nozzles.

The atomizers differ in two macro categories:

1. Hydraulic atomizer

The hydraulic atomizer allow spray the liquid very finely with the only hydraulic pressure.
Usually the pressures used in hydraulic atomizers are medium to high, and the greater the pressure the smaller the diameter of the drops will be.

2. Pneumatic atomizer

The pneumatic atomizer mix the compressed air (or other gases) with the liquid from pulverize, producing a very fine spray nebulisation.
When the pressures and liquids used vary, the diameter of the drops may vary.
Usually in the pneumatic atomizers the pressures involved are relatively low and almost never higher than 3 bar.

Internal and external mixing of an atomizer

Internal mixing

With internal mixing the liquid is mixed inside the air nozzle to produce a perfectly atomised spray.
Many choices of sprays for flow rates and type of shape are possible:

  • full cone
  • hollow cone
  • flat jet

The feeding can be either by pressing, falling or with Venturi effect.

External mixing

In this case the air mixing with the liquid is obtained outside the air nozzle.
This type of nozzles is particularly suitable for applications with liquids with high viscosity, density, or with very small solid particles.
The types of sprays available are:

  • flat jet
  • full cone

Applications of atomizers

Possible application of an atomizer: humidification, cooling, deodorization, application of liquids on products or surfaces.
